The Research Information Management System (RIMS) is a collaborative effort between a number of South African research institutions, comprising of both Higher Educational Institutions and various Science Councils, working together as a consortium to enhance their research management capabilities. RIMS is aimed at providing an integrated view of R&D investments in the country. Information and reports collected from the system will enable government to formulate policies that will drive the National System of Innovation.

The Department of Science and Technology sponsored the project and the implementation is facilitated through the National Research Foundation. A national system license was procured from US based company, InfoEd Inc. which provides end-to-end best of breed solutions for the field of research administration. The system will also benefit researchers with the management of their research processes
